2025 Southland Regional Supreme Winner: Cam Nelson and Christina Vaughan of Nelson Farming Company – Deer

The family behind this Southland deer farm is guided by a strong focus on improving genetics and farming practices, while remaining committed to environmental stewardship.

The Nelson family has been at the 164ha (148ha effective) property since 2003, slowly transitioning from being a 50:50 sheep and deer operation to exclusively farming deer.

Today they run 250 mixed-age stags, 400 breeding hinds, 180 R2 velvet stags and 180 R2 hinds that are sold in-calf. The judges said that superior stockmanship and a well-optimised system enabled the team to successfully manage the high stocking rate.

Constant improvement is a guiding principle at Nelson Farming Company, with the team recognising there’s always something to adjust and enhance. They set clear production targets and constantly seek opportunities for improvement.

The team has implemented a robust genetic programme that’s focused on selecting desirable traits, such as high velvet production and disease resistance. All hinds undergo DNA testing to inform breeding decisions, and this careful genetic selection has resulted in an annual velvet production of 3,400kg.

Winter grazing practices have been dramatically improved through the development of a wintering shed and construction of a dedicated winter hind pad. This infrastructure has both minimised pasture damage and vastly improved animal welfare.

There has been significant investment in other areas too, including native planting around ponds, the implementation of sediment traps, and the introduction of measures to improve water flow on the property.

Meanwhile, biodiversity has been enhanced through an ongoing planting programme, including the replacement of eucalyptus with native species.

The judges were impressed with how the farm demonstrates a high level of production while minimising its impact on the wider environment.

Nelson Farming Company has grown significantly while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainable practices. This is due to a strong focus on genetics and innovation – all while being in tune with the wider environment.

Cam and Christina were the winners of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Farm Award, Rabobank Agri-Business Management Award, NZFET Biodiversity Award, and Southland Regional Supreme Winners 2025.
